Expulsion has a 1/2 a meter spinning disk made out of 10mm military grade steel, which has four spikes hidden inside. The spikes only protrude once the weapon gets up to full speed - preventing opponents from trying to slow it down. The disk is protected inside the body of the robot. The weapon has the ability to spin one way to slash the opponent and the other way to skewer them, whilst the blades move at an impressive 20 times a second. On top of this, the motor will recharge the batteries when breaking and the whole robot has a very low ground clearance.

What makes Expulsion unique...

From Essex, each member of this team is highly interested in a future in Engineering and study a combination of Maths, Design Technology and/or Physics - building the robot in their Design Technology teachers robotics club. Their tactic is to use the speed of the blade to expel the opponent from the ring. Once they have shredded their enemy, they will sweep them into the pit. They have designed Expulsion’s weapon skillfully so that it gets up to full speed inside itself, and only comes out when the enemy approaches, therefore protecting itself. The tip of the blade at full speed has been measured to exert the same pressure if you were 10,000,000 metres underwater. It was built on a tight budget - £1000 and in about 2 months.

“We were really hungry when we first sat down to start designing. We were thinking about bagels and the whole ‘ring with spikes sandwiched in between’ kind of came out that train of thought!”
